South Korean electronics multinational Samsung and the Nestlé Institute of Health Sciences are collaborating on a digital health platform that brings together the concept of the internet of things and sensor technologies with nutrition science to “better understand the voice of the body” and “inspire health living”.

Samsung said in a statement that the partnership would “harness the power” of the two fields to “provide new insights into healthy living”.

Although few details about the platform have been released, Samsung says it will make use of its current ARTIK internet of things (IoT) platform.

President and chief strategy officer for Samsung Electronics Young Sohn said in an announcement the company was excited about the “breakthroughs” the collaboration would bring.

“Today, we live in an era of smarter living brought about by the convergence of technology and life science. It’s an era where the data from smart sensors and devices in our daily life such as mobile phones, wearables, and smart refrigerators can help us to understand our nutrition and activity and to guide us towards a healthier lifestyle,” he said.

Nestlé chief technology officer Stefan Catsicas said the project would advance Nestlé's “Nutrition, Health and Wellness strategy, to support people who want to live a healthier lifestyle”.

The Swiss food giant declined to give further information on the collaboration.

“We expect to be able to give more details about the platform when the first pilots begin in early 2017,” a Nestlé spokesperson told us.

Samsung did not respond to our request for comment in time for the publication of this article.
