RSPO needs to broaden its principles: Cargill

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) has been called on to renew its principles on zero deforestation, land development and rights by Cargill Refined Oils Europe.

In this video for Cargill’s sustainability manager Caroline Sikking said she hoped a letter the firm sent to the RPSO in April would drive change from within and improve its standards.

“The demand from certain non-governmental organisations and customer groups are moving beyond or to different standards and some of these are not yet covered by the RSPO,” she claimed.

Change from within

“For example the pledge for zero deforestation I think is one of the key areas that needs to be addressed and hopefully we are able to draft a change from within the RSPO.”

Watch this video to find out what Sikking said were the next steps to take to encourage broader standards from the RSPO.

She also revealed how Cargill is implementing sustainable palm oil production in its plants and refineries worldwide.

RSPO really isn't the answer

Now don't get me wrong. Sustainability is vital in this particular field. But RSPO just does not work well, as it is prohibitive for small businesses here, and obviously smallholders over there. If people cannot afford to produce or purchase sustainable oil, then it is clearly not working. Sustainability should come from the producers.

Answer to the interview

Contrary to what is said, RSPO is not as inclusive as it is suggested. Instead of being committed to RSPO, suppliers should be committed to small farmers. This is what sustainability is all about.
