SOFHT launches student award
The Society of Food Hygiene and Technology (SOFHT) has launched its 2014 Student Award to encourage students to choose a career in the food industry.

The award is sponsored by UK-supermarket Tesco, who is offering the winner an unpaid internship within its group trading law and technical team.

The winner, second and third prize winners will receive a cash prize and vouchers to spend on technical resources from Campden BRI.

Students will be required to write a 2,000 word dissertation on the findings of the Elliott Report into the horsemeat scandal.

Catherine Watkinson, chair of SOFHT, said food safety is more important now than ever before.

“Today’s fast moving food industry provides an exciting and stimulating career whether in retail buying roles, food testing, technical management, quality control or new product development for example," she said.

“Today’s students are the future lifeblood of the industry and we want to encourage them to see food safety and hygiene as integral to a career in food”.
