Nursery diets cause government concern

16-Mar-2010

A new report has raised concern about the nutritional quality of foods given to young children by childminders and nurseries, as there is no up-to-date guidance on what carers should feed them.

According to the report by the School Food Trust, one in four children starting primary school at the age of five is overweight or obese. Modern lifestyle mean mothers are more likely to return to work while their children are still toddlers, meaning they rely on the care of child care services.

However food given to children in their care by these services could may be too high in fat, sugar and salt and be lacking in essential nutrients.

There is also concern that toddlers are being given adult-sized portions, and that their food contains “additives usually banned from young children’s foods,” according to the BBC.
