The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has adopted an AOAC international method to authorise the labelling of inulin as a fibre. The move comes after several years of campaigning by the inulin producing industry. The FSA adopted a Guidance Note that recommends that the reference procedure for analysis of dietary fibre is an AOAC international method.
The method is AOAC 997.08, an analysis specific for fructans, such as inulin, in food products. This method is recommanded to the manufacturers to ensure consistent labelling of products.
This recent developement allows food manufacturers to label inulin and oligofructose as dietary fibres in the UK. They will be able to claim the following benefits: enriched with fibres, fibres added, rich in fibre.
