FSA advises on sustainable fish choices

18-Sep-2009

The UK’s Food Standards agency is sticking by its advice for people to eat at least two fish portions a week, of which one should be oily – but is highlighting the need for sustainable choices.

The food agency has made a commitment to taking sustainability into account in all its policies. The fish eating advice was developed in consultation with Defra, the Department of Health, the Scottish Government and other government departments. Responses from stakeholders like the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution and the Sustainable Consumption Roundtable.
Amongst the recommendations, consumers are encouraged to try to choose fish that has been produced sustainably or responsibly managed, look for assurance scheme logos, and be adventurous and eat a wider variety of fish species.
