Farming systems that capture and store carbon in the soil make for cost-effective action on climate change, says the FAO, but agriculture has been largely excluded from financing debates in Copenhagen.

In a policy brief prepared for the climate talks, the UN body says agriculture a cause of climate change (responsible for 14 per cent of GHG emissions), will suffer because of it – but must also be part of the solution.

It believes that 70 per cent of the emissions reduction could be in developing countries.
